A child’s every visit to the dentist should be enjoyable and positive. Our office makes a practice of using pleasant, non-frightening, simple words to describe to every child what we do at every appointment. Although we know that all parents mean well, sometimes a parent’s description of what will take place at the dentist can actually frighten some children. Children are not born with a fear of the dentist, but they can read emotions very well. Detailed descriptions of what will take place during a dental visit can frighten them easily.
We want them to feel at ease from the moment they walk into our office, all the way through each and every treatment they receive. We have many ways to make them comfortable while in our care; we can distract them with cartoons that play on the overhead TVs in each room; we can laugh, make jokes and chat about their day; we always explain things in kid-friendly language; we use “happy air” (nitrous oxide) during more extensive treatments; we take the time to carefully administer anesthetics so that they are not aware when they receive injections; we give lots of praise for doing well, sitting still and we reward them with fun prizes at the end.
Parents are amazed usually at how well their kids do at our office and they are extremely grateful for the care we provide and the pleasant, fun, warm environment throughout.
