Get Dental Crowns in Spruce Grove & Strengthen Your Smile

A dental crown is a cap shaped in the form of a tooth that is placed over an existing tooth to restore its shape and size, add strength or improve its appearance. When the crown is firmly cemented into place, the entire portion of the existing tooth is fully encapsulated by the crown and no longer visible. There are many reasons to get dental crowns at Spruce Grove’s Campbell Dental Centre, including:

  • Preventing a weak tooth from breaking down
  • Holding a cracked tooth together
  • Restoring a tooth that has been severely worn down
  • Covering up a tooth that has a large filling but little tooth structure remaining
  • Supporting a dental bridge
  • Covering up misshaped or discoloured teeth
  • Covering up dental implants

The benefits of dental crowns are many – from strengthening teeth to enhancing your appearance to restoring damaged teeth to their natural shape and size. Contact Campbell Dental Centre and see what dental crowns can do for your smile.

Types of Crowns

Our crowns are able to be fabricated using a number of materials:

  • Metal – These crowns are made of gold and are long-lasting. The crown won’t chip or break, however, they can wear down your opposing natural teeth.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal – This type of crown offers a more natural look using porcelain or composite material. Yet the metal helps keep it from chipping unlike pure porcelain or composite crowns.
  • Resin – Usually, a resin crown is the least expensive. However, they can wear down more quickly that other types of crowns and will require replacement at a later date.
  • Ceramic – Ceramic provides a more natural look to your smile because the ceramic is tooth-coloured. One drawback of ceramic crowns, however, is that they wear or chip over time and can require repairs or replacement.

The Process of Implementing a Dental Crown

During the initial consultation for a dental crown, the dentist will numb the tooth in question and the gums in the general vicinity of the tooth. Depending on the nature of the tooth, the dentist will either add filler or file it down to accommodate the custom impression of the tooth for the custom mould of the crown. The impression will be sent to a laboratory where the crown will be created, and it will be returned to our office within two to three weeks.

Once the crown has been sent back to our office, the dentist will gently cement the crown in place and ensure that it fits properly.

While dental crowns can improve the look of your tooth, it’s a general rule that you shouldn’t get a crown solely for aesthetic reasons. In order to get a crown, you have to trim down the tooth in question. There is no reversing this. Furthermore, alternative procedures are available to improve the appearance of teeth like teeth whitening or veneers. A dental crown should be used if there is significant damage or if it needs structural reinforcing.
